Can I use the NABERS Energy and Water Ratings for my home?

NABERS Energy and Water Ratings apply to the following types of homes:

  • Detached
  • Townhouses
  • Duplexes
  • Semis
  • Villas
  • Terraces

NABERS Energy and Water Ratings do not currently apply to apartments, units and flats where there are three or more dwellings in the same building that are placed on top of, or underneath of, another dwelling within the building. The billed energy and water used for these homes typically excludes the additional use attributed to shared services such as lights, lifts and recreation facilities. Because of this, an accurate comparison to the NABERS benchmark cannot be made. NABERS is reviewing these types of homes to be included in the future. Refer to the energy and water saving tips to save energy and water in all types of homes.

Before you rate your home, you will need to have 12 consecutive months’ worth of energy and water bills.

The energy and water use for your home is compared to a dataset of energy and water use from thousands of Australian homes. To enable this comparison between very different homes, your home’s energy and water use is adjusted based on the following:
  • How many people live in your home. This figure is also used to estimate the typical size of a home.
  • How many weeks each year your home is occupied.
  • Climate. The post code you submit locates your home within a defined climate zone. Your energy use is adjusted if your home is in a warmer or cooler climate than the typical Australian home.

Once your energy and water use are adjusted by the above factors, your energy and water use are compared to national averages and a NABERS Energy and Water rating are assigned.

NABERS is a national initiative managed by the NSW Government.
