About NABERS for retail

Your Path:  About NABERS for retail

NABERS can provide an accurate, comparable measure of your shopping centre’s performance to improve industry and public understanding of its environmental impact.

NABERS can be used to measure a shopping centre’s operational energy and water efficiency, on a scale from 1 to 5 stars, with 2.5 stars representing market median performance. A 5 star rating demonstrates market leading performance, while a 1 star rating means the building is performing well below median market practice and has considerable scope for improvement.

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) is a Government initiative to measure and compare the environmental performance of buildings, such as offices, hotels and shopping centres against their market.  The goal of NABERS is to encourage innovation and market best practice to improve sustainability in the built environment.

NABERS is a Government initiative with strong industry support.  NABERS ratings for Shopping Centres were developed with the assistance of the retail property industry.  It is managed nationally by the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) on behalf of Federal, state and territory governments.

NABERS is the only environmental rating tool that provides a reliable benchmark of the actual environmental performance of a shopping centre compared to other Australian shopping centres.

NABERS ratings for offices have been established for 10 years, and most owners, managers and occupants of office buildings use NABERS as a central pillar of their sustainability agenda to understand, improve and communicate their environmental performance. Now shopping centre owners can also use NABERS to measure and manage performance.

NABERS is a national initiative managed by the NSW Government.
