Water: government support
Wherever you are in Australia, it is likely
that government has programs and funding available to support your water
efficiency programs. Below is a list of some relevant programs. The
Funded project examples page contains a
sample of projects that have benefited from these programs.

The NSW Government’s $340 million Climate
Change Fund has been established to help households, business, schools and
government save water, energy and greenhouse gas emissions. It includes
residential rebates for rainwater tanks, hot water systems and insulation,
funding for renewable energy development, support for water and energy savings
in business and public facilities and programs to improve water and energy
efficiency in NSW schools.
Sydney Water offers a formalised water
saving process for business customers who spend more than $70,000 per year on
water and related charges. The
Every
Drop Counts Business Program process incorporates water management into your
day to day business operations, as well as at a strategic level.
The Environmental Trust is an independent
statutory body established by the NSW Government to support exceptional
environmental projects that do not receive funds from the usual government
sources.
Melbourne’s water businesses, City West
Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water and Melbourne Water, together with
the Victorian Government have established and jointly operate the Smart Water
Fund. The Smart Water Fund was established to encourage and support innovative
development of water, biosolids recycling and water saving projects within the
community.
Melbourne’s Government owned water retailers
offer a savewater efficiency service that includes a site assessment and
report. Through this service, the Sustainable Melbourne Fund provides an option
to finance water savings measures and to make repayments through an agreed
Payment by Savings Plan.
The aim of the Program is to provide
expertise to commercial users to identify how much water is being used and when
it is being used. A data logger charts water use over a week and helps to
identify any major leaks or other wastage of water on the site. A walk-through
audit identifies any efficiencies that could be put in place to reduce water use
and save money, including preventative maintenance and repair programs and
upgrading fixtures.
The Water Corporation provides information
and advice to Western Australian businesses. You may also be eligible for
Waterwise
rebates when you buy water efficient products.
The Queensland Government has allocated $40
million for the Business Water Efficiency Program (BWEP) - an incentive scheme
that provides financial and technical support to help businesses save water
across South East Queensland (SEQ). BWEP is managed by SEQWater and delivered
through the 21 Councils of SEQ.
SA Water is committed to working with our
top water users throughout the state to identify opportunities to reduce water
consumption and minimise wastewater production. The Water Conservation and
Wastewater Minimisation Program offers Water efficiency audit, Site plan, Water
efficiency report,Education and training, Monitoring and ongoing
support
The Australian Government Water Fund is a $2
billion Australian Government programme to invest in water infrastructure,
improved water management, and better practices in the stewardship of
Australia’s scarce water resources. The Fund will support practical on-ground
water projects that will improve Australia’s water efficiency and environmental
outcomes.
