Water is a scarce resource throughout much of Australia.  Many water authorities have introduced water restrictions and mandatory water savings programs.

Water users in most urban areas throughout Australia are subject to water restrictions.  Specific restrictions vary considerably between locations.  We strongly encourage you to check the current water restrictions applicable in your area.  Use the links below to visit your local authority.

Mandatory water savings programs
 
NSW
All high water users in Sydney Water’s area of operations (Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Illawarra) are required to prepare Water Savings Action Plans.
A list of organisations required to prepare savings action plans was published as a Water Savings Order in the NSW Government Gazette on Friday 28 October 2005. It includes:
 
  • Businesses in Sydney Water's area of operations with a site using more than 50 million litres of water a year.
  • All local councils in Sydney Water's area of operations
  • NSW Government agencies in Sydney Water's area of operations which use at least 50 million litres of water a year at a site

QLD
Certain mandatory requirements have been placed on businesses in South East Queensland that restrict the use of town water after 30 June 2007.  See http://www.waterforever.com.au/ for more details.
